Italy Student Visa 2026 | Guidelines & Requirements

    No Comments3 Mins Read

Students planning to study in Italy for more than three months must apply for the Italy Student Visa, also known as the national or D-visa. This long-stay visa allows entry to Italy, but all non-EU students will also need to obtain an Italian residence permit upon arrival. Italy is a top choice for international students, offering numerous scholarships and study programs. Applying early is essential, especially since a pre-enrollment letter can be used to apply for the visa. Below are the detailed requirements and guidelines for the Italy Student Visa application process.

Who Needs an Italy Student Visa?

Only nationals from the following countries are exempt from the Italy Student Visa requirement:

    • EU (European Union) Countries
    • Switzerland
    • Norway
    • Liechtenstein
    • Iceland

Even citizens of these countries must apply for a residence permit within three months of arriving in Italy. For all other countries, students must apply for a student visa at their nearest Italian embassy, consulate, or VFS office before traveling to Italy.

Why You Need a Long Stay (D) Visa

If you are coming to Italy for higher education (undergraduate, postgraduate, or longer programs exceeding 90 days), you’ll need a long-stay visa (D-visa). This visa is also required for work purposes if staying longer than three months.

Requirements for the Italy Student Visa

To apply for the Italy Student Visa, you’ll need the following documents:

    1. Student Visa Application Form
    2. Enrollment Offer: Proof of enrollment or admission from an Italian university.
    3. Passport-Sized Photos
    4. Proof of Enrollment/Pre-Enrollment: Evidence of enrollment in an Italian course.
    5. Police Clearance: Certificate from your home country.
    6. Proof of Accommodation: Documentation of housing arrangements in Italy.
    7. Health Insurance: Valid for the duration of your stay.
    8. Educational Documents: All previous academic records.
    9. Financial Proof: Statements showing sufficient funds to support yourself.
    10. Visa Application Fee: Proof of payment.

    1. Complete the Application Form: Fill out the Italy Student Visa application form.
    2. Book an Appointment: Schedule an appointment with VFS Global or check with your local Italian embassy/consulate.
    3. Attend Appointment: Bring original documents and copies on the appointment day.
    4. Pay Visa Fee and Submit Documents: Submit all required documents, including your passport.

    Visa Cost

The Italy Student Visa application fee is approximately €50, though costs may vary based on nationality.

Applying for the Italian Residence Permit

Within eight working days of arrival in Italy, students must apply for a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) to formalize their stay. To do so, bring your passport and relevant travel documents to the local post office or One-Stop-Shop for Immigration.

    Residence Permit Costs:

    • €40 for stays between 3 and 12 months
    • €50 for stays between 12 and 24 months
    • €100 for long-term permits

    Working in Italy During Studies

International students on a study visa can work up to 20 hours per week, with a maximum of 1,040 hours within 52 weeks.
